Valleywag has a pretty spot on guide to starting a writing career. While I admittedly have more experience as an editor than as a freelancer, all the points strike me a very true, whether they seem silly or not.

Yes, it’s a little depressing but probably spot-on. If I have aspirations as a writer they probably coincide with his, except I’m not as interested in the tech-journalism word. Still, I’m guessing that it’s all the same, no matter what angle you take…

Perhaps, in so much as it might be encouraging mediocrity or low expectations. However, I think it’s also an honest and realistic portrayal of today’s reality. Somewhat related, several journalism blogs have been having an interesting debate about ‘Generation Intransigent‘.
