High Quality Video

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

Normally videos look like shit on YouTube but I just saw a trailer that looked great. The reason why? It was in black and white. I wonder if B&W could be an intermediate step towards true HD video streaming. I doubt many people would like that, but it’s an interesting thought… That being said, I’ve been watching GameSpy’s high quality streaming videos and while they take a long time to load, they look fantastic (and are in color).

Designing the World

Friday, July 27th, 2007

It turns out that working in the OSS Presentation Department lead to some unique tasks, including designing the Nuremberg trials court rooms and the presentations used during them and, by accident, the UN logo.

Modern Art

Friday, April 6th, 2007

I Hate Freedom

Wednesday, June 28th, 2006

A revised design for the Freedom Tower is out and again I am struck by the stupidity of naming the damn building the Freedom Tower. Am I the only one who thinks this mindless abuse of the word freedom in the US (freedom fries, the terrorists hate our freedom, etc) only serves to cheapen the very thing people claim to be championing?

Side Job

Did you know that Drew Carry is, along with being a comedian, a professional soccer photograper?

Designing a New Biloxi

Monday, May 22nd, 2006

The New York Times Magazine has an interesting article on the debate about rebuilding Biloxi. Much of the piece is devoted to the New Urbanism advocates whose well-intentioned ideas of renewing city life seem to have degraded into aesthetic regulations that would outdo even the most reactionary gated community’s codes. Ultimately, though, the problem is that the current location of the city is one that cannot be protected from hurricanes (houses have to be 21 feet above sea level in East Biloxi according to new FEMA regulations for the area 6 feet above the sea).
