Papers
Below are several papers I have written over the past few years. Some are better than others, though hopefully some progression is evident. I have grouped them by school, from most recent to oldest.

Small State Referendum Voting on European Integration:
The Cases of Denmark and Ireland
Download (PDF, 250 kb)
This is the exact document I turned in for my Masters dissertation and received a mark of 'Merit' on. In the paper I examine the history of Irish and Danish referendum voting and suggest that position and negative voting correlate closely to perceived economic benefits of European integration and the perceived loss of political sovereignty in foreign affairs.
Danish Voting on European Integration
Download (PDF, 236 kb)
This paper was written for the course "Citizen's Political Behaviour in Europe". It examines voters' reasons for voting for or against European integration treaties in referendums in Denmark.
University of Chicago
What Does It Mean to Be European?
Full Paper (PDF, 516 kb)
Conference Paper (PDF, 117 kb)
This is what we call at Chicago the BA paper, what some call a senior thesis. Regardless, this is a long paper on European identity and how it relates to the European Union. I read a shortened version of the paper at a small graduate student conference at the UofC called "(Re)defining Europe" a month or so after submitting the full paper.
The National Socialist Economy
Download (PDF, 181 kb)
This paper was written for a course titled "Fascism". It examines several theories of Nazi economic management and suggests that the Nazi economy was neither capitalistic nor socialistic.
Is Postcolonial Theory Outdated?
Download (PDF, 94 kb)
This paper is a consideration of the criticisms of postcolonial theory by Hardt and Negri in their book Empire, ultimately finding that their criticisms are relatively weak. The paper was written for a class called "Postcolonial Theory".
Social Tensions in the Paris of the Commune
Download (PDF, 90 kb)
This paper considers the social conflicts of the Paris Commune using the rubric of understanding Paris as city, center, and capital. It was written for the "History of Paris" course I took while studying for a quarter in Paris.
Subversion
Download (PDF, 35 kb)
This paper examines British notions of subversion and the use of the Special Branch (especially of the Metropolitan Police) and the Security Service (MI5) to monitor, control, and combat it. The paper was written for a course titled "1968" which was devoted to the political unrest that swept across many countries that year.
